Jane Street Lost $15 Billion in Its First Down Month in a Decade
Jane Street took a $15 billion hit in July from its exposure to AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness and other tech stocks that were battered by the market selloff, according to two people familiar with the matter and a note seen by Reuters.
The secretive Wall Street trading firm, however, has generated trading revenue of more than $40 billion year to date, one of the sources said, easily outstripping trading revenue at the largest banks and other market-making rivals. That total is more than the $39.6 billion that Jane Street generated for all of last year.
In July, Situational, which is run by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, offloaded the bulk of its stock portfolio in what was a fire sale to billionaire Ken Griffin's Citadel after being hurt by the AI selloff that triggered margin calls at the firm. Situational counts Jane Street among its investors. Reuters
Nigerian Consumers Opt For Neighborhood Stores Over Big Retailers
Nigerians are increasingly shifting their daily shopping towards neighbourhood stores rather than traditional large-format retail outlets, as convenience and proximity become more important in consumer spending.
This is according to Knight Frank’s Africa Report 2026/27, which examines trends across Africa’s real estate markets. The report, described as The Ultimate Guide to Africa’s Real Estate Markets, provides an overview of developments across key property sectors, including Nigeria’s office, residential, retail, and industrial and logistics markets.
The report said there is a clear shift towards convenience-led and hyper-local retail formats in Nigeria, with neighbourhood-focused brands increasingly capturing daily essential spending within residential areas where consumer demand remains relatively resilient. Nairametrics
Anthropic's Revenues More Than Doubled In The Quarter To $11.5 Billion
Anthropic's revenue surged more than 14-fold in the second quarter from a year earlier, underscoring the rapid growth of the Claude chatbot maker as it prepares for a potential blockbuster initial public offering.
The AI company reported preliminary revenue of more than $11.5 billion for its latest completed quarter, up from $787 million in the same period last year and $4.73 billion in the first quarter of 2026, according to documents viewed by Bloomberg News.
The rapid growth comes as the company battles its longtime rival OpenAI to win over corporate customers. Once considered an underdog in the artificial intelligence race, Anthropic has seen a surge in professionals adopting its software to streamline tasks including coding. Bloomberg
